Augustine said, “John’s Gospel is deep enough for an elephant to swim and shallow enough for a child not to drown.” In my attempt to better know Jesus, I have been researching John 1 using Mike’s advanced Logos software. All week I’ve been swimming with the elephants and now it’s time to wade to the shallow end so that I don’t drown.
There are some key words in John’s writing. Words like: word, life, light, and fullness. Even normally insignificant words like ‘with’ and ‘was’ in God’s vocabulary has profound meanings in the text. The more I studied the more I didn’t know. In the sciences, a doctor can study one species his whole life and never fully master the subject. This is so much more a truth of God’s Word. I think I need to become a biblical lightomologist or lifemotologist. Needless to say I don’t think there could be a better occupation as long as I’d know that most days I’d feel like an elephant was sitting on my brain. Let’s just face it, God is deep and there will be subjects that our human frailties limit us from understanding completely. I say all that to preface this writing with this, “I’m writing to you from the shallow end.”
Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood (overcome) it. John 1:3-5
John is introducing us to Jesus the Creator God. We can return to Genesis 1 and see that Jesus created the world by speaking. His Words have all the creating power to make something from nothing. His words create life. Out of nothing, Jesus spoke, “Let there be ME! Out of My Light then all life will come.” Just as there is no darkness in His Light, then there is only death apart from His Life. The absence of Light is nothingness. The absence of Life is death. Can we then say, “anyone who is living apart from God is lifeless, dead, and still in nothingness? Absolutely. There is no true life apart from God. He not only gives life but He alone sustains life. Job 34:14-15 says, “If it were his intention and he withdrew his spirit and breath, all mankind would perish together and man would return to the dust.”
Jesus is God who spoke Himself to bring forth all life into the world and only by His power does that life maintain today. He even left His mark within our bodies to prove this truth. It’s called laminin. In the human body, we are made of trillions and trillions of cells that comprise our body and all its intricate parts. What holds this vast body together? Laminin. Laminin is a protein that acts as the glue that holds all of our trillions of cells together. Here is a picture of the scientific structure of laminin. Delight yourself in His magnificent detail.
Just for fun and to expand our awe of Him, check out this picture from the depths of a black hole. This is a photograph taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. It is of the center of a black hole in a galaxy millions of light years from Earth. All Christians believe that God created the universe and everything in it, aka life. Look at what the image is that is located in the center of that black hole millions of light years away.
Jesus said, “Let there be ME!” He is the life of all creation from the intricacies of its inner depths to the vastness of its outer depths. And He holds all true life together forever and forever. (Revelation 21:23) Jesus, the Lamb will be the Light of all eternity. From creation there was the cross. For all eternity there will be the Lamb. Amen
I don’t know what this does for you but for me, I’m staggering in His glory!
