If a tree falls and no one is in the forest to hear, did it make a sound? Yes, it audibly crashed with all the thunder of a mighty force hitting the earth. Only a human’s ego would allow him/her to think that the crashing sound was dependent upon his presence. Sadly, it’s this self-centered mindset that can keep us from hearing God’s never-ending voice. Just because we didn’t hear, doesn’t mean He doesn’t speak.
Is it possible to hear an inaudible voice? With God all things are possible. When we accept that truth then we can begin to believe beyond ourselves. God is supernatural. When a believer is walking in obedience with God then the supernatural is the way of life. The normal Christian life according to our God would be a life of radical super-living as we daily walk and talk with the Lord.
The past few weeks, I’ve discussed the reasons many people are not hearing the voice of God. These reasons are the hindrances for living the supernatural.
- Not expecting Him to speak.
- Not wanting to hear what He says.
- Not knowing when He does speak.
Now I’d like to spend a few weeks examining the ways in which God does speak. This is where life gets exciting. One word from God, five seconds in His presence is better than thousands of books or sermons. Therefore, I can’t imagine anything more important for a believer. The foundation of our salvation and sanctification is based upon our hearing His voice.
Psalm 19 begins:
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.
God speaks inaudibly every second of every day and night. His creation is broadcasting unceasingly. Are your ears in tune? “Sure!” you say. We all delight in the sunrises and sunsets and exclaim, “Wow, God you are good.” As we behold the beautiful sights of nature around this globe we are often awed and speechless. From the top of Pike’s Peak to the white sand beaches of Barbabos, from the rice patties of Korea to the rolling countryside of Tuscany, I have seen His beautiful handiwork. For me, worship was the only true response to such majesty. When He’s broadcasting His glory, we will worship. But when we grow still and listen, we will hear so much more. We can actually hear Him reveal His attributes and teach His law through His creation. Listen!
“I am in control, obey me.”
“I have an established order, keep it.”
“I hold all things together, trust me.”
“I’m into the details, pay attention.”
“I’m beautiful and creative, enjoy me.”
“I am powerful, fear me.”
As God broadcasts His glory, we His children can also hear Him declare His attributes and His law. Romans 1:20 says, For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
Creation is broadcasting and every person will be held accountable for what they hear or don’t hear. Here are a few steps to help you insure the hearing of not only His glory but also His law and His character.
Slow down! If you are one who often says, ‘there’s never enough hours in the day;’ then you are moving too fast. It’s time to eliminate busyness. Begin with the nonessentials: TV is number one on the list. Ask the Lord to show you the things He has intended you to do. If you cannot say, ‘I clearly heard God say to do this’ then don’t do it. A day spent where you can delight in His creation is a day well spent. It’s okay to sit on your porch and enjoy the flowers!
This is what the Sovereign LORD, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it.” Isaiah 20:15
Repent! Admit the reason you are not clearly hearing and understanding His voice from creation is that you have refused to slow down and listen. Ask Him to show you the things that interfere with hearing Him. Eliminate them immediately.
Listen! Plan time each day that you will rest in Him. This is not the time that you offer your list of requests or even study His Word. This is time that you just enjoy the beauty of Him all around you. As you are walking around your neighborhood, lounging in the yard, sitting in your garden, looking out the window, or gazing at the stars, ask Him to speak loud and clear to your hungry soul. Don’t move until your ears become attuned to His broadcast.
Respond! Sing in the rain, dance under the stars, shout to the treetops, roll around in the grass, kneel at His feet, or do whatever your heart feels.
