Who said it?

Let’s share wisdom and God’s truth and have a bit of fun along the way.  You can use this page to post quotes from your favorite books (including the Bible), teachers, and sermons.  If we can’t guess the author, make sure you return to give us the answer!  Our next quote is from one of the greatest writers in Christianity of both fiction and nonfiction.

Quote #3:

“All Hell is smaller than one pebble of your earthly world: but it is smaller than one atom of this world, the Real World.  Look at yon butterfly.  If it swallowed all Hell, Hell would not be big enough to do it any harm or to have any taste.”

Who said it?  C. S. Lewis in The Great Divorce

Quote #2:

“God is not safe and He will not be squeezed into some neat, respectable Sunday discusssion…To know God at all is to watch Him explode any box we put Him in with His terror, majesty and indescribable wonder.”

Who said it?  James MacDonald Gripped by the Greatness of God

Quote #1:

“Put together all the tenderest love you know of, the deepest you have ever felt, and the strongest that has ever been poured out upon you, and heap upon it all the love of all the loving human hearts in the world, and then multiply it by infinity, and  you will begin perhaps to have some faint glimpse of the love and grace of God.”

Who said it?  Hannah Whitall Smith taken from The Christian’s Secret of a Happy Life.

  1. Ok, I don’t really know who that is, but I’ll be brave and make a guess. I remember how much you love Jim Cymbala, so I’ll guess that this is one of his quotes, maybe from Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire??

    1. Great guess Cindy. You are correct that I love the teachings of Jim Cymbala but he is not the author of this quote. Let me give a hint or two: The author is a woman who lived in the late 1800s. Her teachings can be found in the Classics along with Foxe’s Book of Martyrs and The Pilgrim’s Progress. Anyone have a guess now?

  2. OOOOps, So sorry I have ignored this post. The author of the above quote describing the love of God is….drumroll….Hannah Whitall Smith. It was taken from the book The Christians’ Secret of a Happy Life. Powerful book of short essays and discussion questions.

You will be blessed if you read it!

  3. Is it Mark Buchanan? I read his book ‘Your God Is Too Safe’.

    1. Excellent guess from an excellent book. The quote certainly matches the content of Buchanan’s writing. But not the right answer, sorry. Guess again 😉

  4. Quotation #2 comes from James MacDonald. His workbook entitled Gripped by the Greatness of God is a must for all believers who want to mature in their knowledge of God toward greater heights of worship! Don’t miss this study.
